Colin Smith is Coordinator of the United Nations’ Analytical Support and Sanctions Monitoring Team, a position he has held since October 2024. Established by the UN Security Council in 2004, the team monitors and supports the implementation of sanctions against individuals and entities associated with al-Qaeda and the Taliban in Afghanistan. It also provides expert assessments on the global threat from al-Qaeda and affiliated organizations, as well  annual reports on peace and security in Afghanistan. Prior to this role, Smith was vice president for delivery in an international development consultancy and, earlier, spent over 20 years as a diplomat in the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office.
