Fareed Yasseen is Secretary General of the Iraq-Pugwash Association. A physicist by training, he conducted research in fusion and space physics before turning to Iraqi human rights activism and opposition politics. In 2004, he joined Iraq’s Foreign Ministry in 2004 and helped negotiate the Strategic Framework and Status of Forces Agreements with the United States in 2007 and 2008, respectively. He then served as Iraq’s Ambassador to France from 2010 to 2016 and to the United States from 2016 to 2022). As Climate Envoy (2022–2024) he returned to a subject he had first encountered at the United Nations Climate Change Secretariat (1996–1998), and on which he is now working in his private capacity.
