Alexander H. Montgomery

Nonresident Senior Fellow, Future Security Program

Alexander H. Montgomery is a professor of political science at Reed College. He has published articles on ; the diffusion of technology, including and 聽and the effects of enabling and on ; the perils of prediction, whether it is for nuclear proliferation by or , the future of , or ; the effects of , the stopping power of , and the future of the ; and the effects of of on , , and . In his recent essay, "The Nonproliferation Implications of the Spread of Emerging Technologies," Montgomery that while new technologies reshape the strategic landscape, they are unlikely to dramatically accelerate nuclear proliferation.

Montgomery is also co-editor of . His research interests include futurism, global catastrophic risks, political organizations, social networks, weapons of mass disruption and destruction, social studies of technology, and interstate social relations. His work has appeared in International Organization, International Security,聽The Journal of Conflict Resolution, The Journal of Peace Research, The Journal of Strategic Studies, and Perspectives on Politics, among other venues.

He has been a faculty affiliate in residence at the Sam Nunn School of International Affairs, Georgia Tech; a residential fellow at the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars; and a Council on Foreign Relations international affairs fellow in nuclear security with a placement in the U.S. Office of the Secretary of Defense working for the Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction, where his portfolio included writing a new Department of Defense Strategy for Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction.
